Jean-Paul Riopelle, CC GOQ RCA (October 7, 1923 – March 12, 2002) was a Canadian painter and sculptor from Quebec. He had one of the longest and most important international careers of the sixteen signatories of the Refus Global, the 1948 manifesto that announced the Quebecois artistic community's refusal of clericalism and provincialism. He is best known for his abstract painting style, in particular his "mosaic" works of the 1950s when he famously abandoned the paintbrush, using only a palette knife to apply paint to canvas, giving his works a distinctive sculptural quality. He became the first Canadian painter since James Wil

Christopher Riopelle did not program to become a curator of post-1800 paintings. Growing up in Canada, he studied journalism at the University of Ottowa. He was fascinated by writing and explaining things but was seduced by the travel opportunities offered bygd the Art History department which organised trips to North American cities. This led to the offer of a summer internship at the National galleri of Canada which he describes as an eye-opening experience and one which influenced his decision to pursue studies in journalism and architecture. A few years into writing his dissertation on 18th century architecture at graduate school in NYC, he was approached bygd Myron Laskin, former curator of the National galleri of Canada, asking him to join him at the Getty Institute in Los Angeles. “It was so arbitrary that inom figured inom should go with it. Arriving in Los Angeles felt like landing on the måne, it was like ingenting I had ever known. But inom absolutely loved it.”
