Sugar Grove Associates are “Living the Charism”

Many area Catholics knew nothing about St. Katharine Drexel when the Diocese of Rockford, some 30 miles west of Chicago, Illinois announced the formation of a new parish in 2008 and named it after her. They quickly became inspired in a big way by St. Katharine’s spirit and charism. On April 20, 2013 seven members were commissioned as Associates of the Sisters of the Blessed Sacrament (ASBS) of the brand-new Sugar Grove Associate Faith Community. Curious about St. Katharine, “Very quickly we knew this was a saint we could all love,” Kathy Scott said. “I guess you’d have to say (the Sugar Grove Associates) all started when we decided we were going to go to the shrine in October 2010 in order to attend the 10th anniversary celebration of St. Katharine’s canonization.”

About us
The Society of St. Vincent de Paul is an international lay Catholic organization founded to serve those in need. Our group is associated with St. Katharine Drexel Catholic Church in Sugar Grove, Illinois. To help those in our area, we visit the homes of people who ask for assistance. In these person-to-person encounters, we offer a listening ear, emotional and spiritual support, and material help. This includes addressing financial needs and offering advice on how to access social services.

Connecting community
Since the establishment of St. Katharine Drexel Parish, it has become home to over 1,000 registered families. Registration in the Religious Education schema exceeds 300 students, from pre-school through high school. Attendance at weekend masses regularly exceeds 1,000 worshippers.
St. Katharine Drexel Catholic Church was founded in 2008, under the Rockford Diocese, and had been leasing space in Sugar Grove for church activities. In late 2009, Cordogan Clark & Associates was asked by the church building committee to assist with the design and construction of the first phase of their master program, the St. Anthony Chapel.
The completed facility is located on 20 acres of cornfield just south of Rich Harvest Farms on Dugan Road in Sugar Grove, Illinois.
