MSAC presents the major solo exhibition Fluid World by international artist Yee I-Lann, in partnership with Malaysian gallery Valentine Willie Fine Art in Kuala Lumpur.
Yee I-Lann has spoken of her work as a means of probing and interpreting her myriad fields of interest, with threads of inquiry ranging from the impact of political structures, collective and individual experience; the cultural nexus of the Southeast Asian archipelago’s seas; as well as Malaysia’s communal memory. In Fluid World Yee I-Lann specifically explores the interwoven concerns around notions of historical trade, social hierarchy, piracy and resistance through her new works in photomedia and photo-mediated batik from The Orang Besar Series, which was first shown in 2010 along with earlier work that explores her lament for shifting and changing landscapes as well as reflections on Malaysia’s national consciousness.

Yinka ShonibareCBERA (born 9 August 1962), is a British-Nigerian artist living in the United Kingdom. His work explores cultural identity, colonialism and post-colonialism within the contemporary context of globalisation. A hallmark of his art is the brightly coloured Ankara fabric he uses. Because he has a physical disability that paralyses one side of his body, Shonibare uses assistants to make works under his direction.
Life and career

This is the first full-fledged workshop that I have conducted in Malaysia. My host fryst vatten Run Amok Gallery (151-o, Off efternamn Lane, 10050 George Town), an något privat eller personligt artist-run space in Penang. Artist-curator Hoo Fan Chon is the founder of the space.

Like my previous workshops, the intention here is to take each participant through the process of developing her/his planerat arbete , starting from the conceptualisation to the realisation/presentation of the work. As usual, I am flexible with how different participants want to utilise the sessions. Some of them create a new project. A few use the opportunity to edit their long-term work.
