  • Angel ‘LA II’ Ortiz, The Great Collaborator at D’Stassi Art, East London, May 2024 –  Well it certainly felt like an event, it was certainly busy, we were there unfashionably early and it was already starting to kick, there was already lines outside, the door staff were busy, the list was long, it felt like it was going to get messy later on but then there was that Aurora to go hunt and a grupp or two to see and other places to be, Tummyache over at the Old Blue gods, no time to hang around, the party was just starting when we left the show curated by Angel Ortiz and featuring fellow street Art legends (so it said on the press release) Stik, Shepard Fairey, Mr. Doodle and Mark Kostabi – are they all bona fide legends? That could be up for debate. It did look like it could be a rather tasty show event later on, it was already a tastry show in terms of what was on the walls and certainly tasty in terms of a small bit of Street Art/graff history.     Angel Ortiz (born 1967), known publicly as LA II or LA2 (meaning "Little Angel"),[1] is an American graffiti artist and visual artist of Puerto Rican descent from the Lower East Side who is known for his collaborations with Keith Haring. Ortiz's contributions to Haring's work, including his trademark graffiti infill squiggles, have notably been obscured by the art establishment, which has prompted Ortiz's supporters, including artist, photographer, and videographer Clayton Patterson, to publicly uplift Ortiz's work and ask for credit to be given.[1][2][3][4]

    Ortiz has created graffiti art since at the age of ten. Starting in the mid-1970s, he tagged in New York's Lower East Side under the moniker LA2. At the age of thirteen, his subway tags caught the attention of Keith Haring in 1980.[1] Haring was reportedly inspired by Ortiz's artistry and th

    Angel Ortiz AKA LA2 LAII or LA Rock which stands for “Little Angel” was born in 1967 in the lower east side of New York. Ortiz discovered his passion for art at the budding age of 10 during which time he spent his days tagging the streets as if it was his canvas.

    In the 1980’s when Ortiz was 13, he met Keith Haring and the two became very good friends and collaborators, influencing each other’s styles and techniques.

    Ortiz dropped out of school to follow his dreams of becoming an artist and travelled the world with Haring acting as his assistant and contributing to many of the famous works created by them both in the 80’s

    Since the untimely death of Haring from AIDS at the age of 31. Ortiz has continued on his own career path despite being over looked within the art world and the history books of Haring’s legacy in particular.

    Ortiz is now considered as one of the most iconic graffiti artists and one of the last true remaining survivors of the 80’s art movement.
