Clark Gable was indeed sued in a paternity suit and he did wind up in the courtroom. However, Carole Lombard did not come to Gable's defense. Gable was able to prove he was not in England where the conception was said to have taken place and the woman was sent to a year in jail for slandering his name.

Steve McQueen and his first wife, Neile Adams, were offered the chance to star together in this film. McQueen was quoted as saying. "Neile's no Lombard and I'm no Gable." They turned down the offer. Other sources claim the tandem of McQueen and second wife Ali MacGraw turned the film down.

    Plot

    [edit]

Film stars Clark Gable and Carole Lombard meet at a Hollywood party, where rugged leading man Gable eschews evening wear and screwball comedian Lombard arrives in an ambulance that wrecks his car. After an argument, it is apparent the two clearly dislike each other, and intensely so, but as fate conspires to bring them together again and again, they begin to admire each other and fall in love.

The fly in the ointment is Gable's second wife Ria. Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer studio chief Louis B. Mayer fears any publicity about his affair with Lombard will jeopardize Gable's career, and since he is MGM's most valuable player, Mayer becomes protective of his s
