  • Life of raskhan
  • Raskhan ( born 1548 ) was a Hindi poet who, although a Muslim, wrote passionate songs about his devotion to Lord Krishna

Sur and Mira also wrote poetry about Lord Krishna ( as did the Tamil poetess Andal ), but Raskhan's devotion to Krishna was much more fervent and intense, as revealed in his poetry.

When I visited his mazaar near Gokul ( during one of my several visits to Mathura ), I found a stanza from one of his well known poems inscribed there :

    " मानुस हौं तो वही रसखान, बसौं मिलि गोकुल गाँव के ग्वारन।

    जो पसु हौं तो कहा बस मेरो, चरौं नित नंद की धेनु मँझारन॥

    पाहन हौं तो वही गिरि को, जो धर्यो कर छत्र पुरंदर धारन।

    जो खग हौं तो बसेरो करौं मिलि कालिंदीकूल कदम्ब की डारन॥ "

    Translation

If I were to be a human, I would like to live in Gokul among the cowherds

If an animal, I would like to be a cow of Nand ( foster father of Krishna )

If a stone, I would like to be like Govardhan hill ( which protected the cowherds from the wrath of Indra, the rain god )

While growing up, I was really fond of a specific part of school curriculum, the one that focussed on importance of literature. English and Hindi literature have been a huge part of my school life as I doted over the literary pieces in both these languages. But today, when I am writing this article in English, it really pains me to say that somewhere on the path of this life, the bias of world towards English took over my love for Hindi literature and it was left behind. However, there is a comfort in knowing that some literary works that I read a long time ago had made a lasting impact on me and I can’t ever forget them even if I tried, the lines written above is among one of them. These lines are a part of the poem known as Prem Vatika which was written by a sixteenth century poet who has been g
