When Ramya Krishnan Challenged Rajinikanth In Padayappa, Fans Began Throwing Slippers At The Screen
Ramya Krishnan as Neelambari
In 1999, director K. S Ravikumar's Padayappa starring Rajinikanth was welcomed in theatres with pomp and cheer. Given that it had Superstar in the lead fans began pouring love on it. Add to it the interesting plot and right amount of commercial elements - the film became a blockbuster.
Publications heaped praise on Rajinikanth's dialogue delivery, and screen presence in the film. However, film buffs could not get enough of another actor - it was Ramya Krishna who played the role of the antagonist in the film.
When fans hated Neelambari and threw slippers at the screen
Ramya Krishna's role as Neelambari was much more than just playing the 'bubbly' heroine. She was character who exuded confidence, and class. Neelambari challenged the hero and even had a face-off with him to seek revenge.

On April 9 this year, Rajinikanth's iconic film Padayappa directed by KS Ravikumar will turn 20. The film, KS Ravikumar's second with the superstar after the success of Muthu in 1995, received a much coveted box-office date – a day before the Tamil New Year – and went on to become the highest grossing Tamil film at that point.
Two decades later, it remains one of Rajinikanth's most popular films and has high recall value among Tamil audiences. It also gave us a woman villain who is till date unsurpassed, Ramya Krishnan's Neelambari.

Rajini Kanth as Padayappa. Ramya Krishnan as Nilambari. Directed by K.S.Ravikumar (of Muthu and enstaka Swaasa Kaatre fame !!!!!) music bygd i-know-only-thagaradappa A.R.Rahman. I pity those souls who drove 21 hrs from the midwest all the way to New Jersey or New York to watch this movie (they even took pride in calling me over the phone to tom-tom their achivement). This movie is Rajini Kanth's worst movie even surpassing Sundar.C's Arunachalam. inom heard from fans close to Rajini saying that he considers K.S.R as the best movie director ever to direct his movie. Jeez Rajini don't just get lulled in to thinking that what you ever u do you would do it right. As a fan of Rajini i feel Suresh Krishnaa is the best. His baasha was the ultimate entertainer. As usual A.R.Rahman's songs were so-so. igen he fails in ansträngande to ape folk music.
