Captain Krystyna Chojnowska-Liskiewicz, the Polish sailor and marine engineer who became the first woman to circumnavigate the globe solo, has died at her home at the age of 84.
Born in 1936 in Warsaw, Captain Chojnowska-Liskiewicz began sailing in childhood. She moved to Gdańsk to study shipbuilding at Gdańsk University of Technology, where she met her husband to be, Wacław Liskiewicz and began serious sea sailing, receiving her captain’s licence at the age of 30.
At a time when Poland lay behind the Iron Curtain and was under the control of Moscow, travel was no simple matter and red tape connected with leaving the Eastern Bloc hindered the careers of many sailors. Nevertheless, Captain Chojnowska-Liskiewicz was able to join several ships on international passages, travelling to the likes of Norway and Scotland. Krystyna Chojnowska-Liskiewicz (15 July 1936 – 13 June 2021) was a Polish naval engineer and sailor as well as the first woman to have sailedsingle-handed (i.e. solo) around the world, repeating the accomplishment of Joshua Slocum.[1][2][3] She sailed from the Canary Islands on 28 March 1976, and returned there on 21 April 1978, completing a circumnavigation of 31,166 nautical miles (57,719 km) in 401 days.

Krystyna was born on June 19, 1936, in Poland. She developed a love for sailing from a young age, spending much of her childhood near the water. However, her dream of circumnavigating the globe seemed far-fetched, especially considering the challenges women faced in the male-dominated world of sailing during the mid-20th century.
Despite the odds, Krystyna remained undeterred. In 1976, she set out on her journey aboard the small sailboat “Mazurek,” a 31-foot Conrad 32 ketch. She departed from Gdynia, Poland, on February 28, 1976, embarking on what would become an epic voyage spanning over 401 days.
Facing treacherous seas, unpredictable weather, and solitude, Krystyna navigated her way through the world’s oceans with remarkable skill and determination. She encountered numerous challenges along the wa
