Biography
One of Australia’s best known and most influential landscape painters, Arthur Streeton was a key member of the Heidelberg school of Australian impressionism – the first distinctively Australian school of painting. For many people, Streeton’s paintings defined a unique image of this country. He spent much of the early 20th century in Europe and served as war artist during the First World War, but later returned to Australia, where he also worked as an art critic.
Streeton received little formal training in art beyond night classes at the National Gallery of Victoria school in Melbourne from to , but his career developed after he met fellow artist Tom Roberts. Along with Frederick McCubbin, and later Charles Conder, he joined Robertss camps at Box Hill and Heidelberg in Victoria. Sir Arthur Ernest Streeton (8 April – 1 September ) was an Australian landscape painter and a leading member of the Heidelberg School, also known as Australian Impressionism.
Early life
[edit]Streeton was born in Mount Moriac, Victoria, south-west of Geelong,[1] on 8 April , the fourth child of Charles Henry and Mary (née Johnson) Streeton. His family moved to the Melbourne suburb of Richmond in [2] His parents were English migrants who had met on their voyage to Australia in [3] In , Streeton commenced art studies with George Folingsby at the National Gallery School.[4]
In , Streeton exhibited works for the first time with the Victorian Academy of Art. He funnen employment as an apprentice lithographer beneath Charles Troedel.[5]
