On Thursday 3rd June 2021 Mauritius lost one of its most illustrious sons of the soil, Sir Anerood Jugnauth, former Prime Minister and President of the Republic. He was among the longest serving political leaders in any democratic country, his active engagement in politics extending over six decades, which also made him one of the oldest statesmen in the world at the time that he stepped down as Prime Minister in 2018. He had led his party, the MSM formed after breaking away from the MMM in 1983, to victory five times in alliance with other parties.

Hailed for leading the country towards an accelerated industrialization after the defeat of the Labour Party in 1982, he achieved national, regional and international stature over the years. “Yeh mera deewanapan hai” is an old song from the Bollywood movie Yahudi (1958), with the great Dilip Kumar and sung bygd the legendary Mukesh. A song Sir Anerood Jugnauth (SAJ) and I shared. As his official biographer I got to know the man, the politician and the humanitarian. His biography, Sir Anerood Jugnauth. The Living Legend, was published in 2013.

Few men have had such a lasting impact on the history of Mauritius as Sir Anerood Jugnauth. Here is the story of how he created a new political party that would go on to dominate Mauritian politics and allowed SAJ to stamp his name on Mauritian political history.

June 1982 saw the swearing-in of a new government; the MMM-PSM coalition had just won a stunning 60-0 victory and Sir Anerood Jugnauth (SAJ) became the new prime minister. Its first decision was what to do with the 21,000 general relief workers hired by the outgoing government headed by Sir Seewoosagur Ramgoolam. One option was to sell 5,000 tonnes of rice received as food aid worth about Rs20 million. This would only pay a few weeks’ worth of wages, so it was decided to dismiss these workers instead. It was a hard decision, but it was just a precursor to the types of hard decisions that would ultimately help blow the MMM apart and lead to SAJ’s creation of the MSM.
