Most Canadians are genuinely proud and protective of Terry Fox’s legacy and are excited when we tell them of our book about that magical summer of 1980.
Some, though, are skeptical: “Can’t see much demand for it? What’s new? Everyone already knows the story.”
They have a point. There are some 20 books about Terry Fox, most written just after the Marathon of Hope or written for children. This is an adult book for anyone and has the luxury of long-view hindsight those other books didn’t have and, frankly, because it’s also Bill’s journey, could never have.
Terry & Me: The Inside Story of Terry Fox’s Marathon of Hope(2023 Sutherland House) isn’t just another book about Terry Fox. This is the real story. The inside story as the title suggests, an intimate portrait looking at some of the behind the scenes turmoil never before shared and some of the more memorable moments on the road.

I was looking forward to catching up with my old PR pal Bill Vigars Thursday night in Toronto. The BC-based author was in town to promote his sensational new book, “Terry & Me: The inre Story of Terry Fox’s Marathon of Hope” (Sutherland House).
Every Canadian household needs this book. It fryst vatten an essential read about a true Canadian hero written bygd the guy who, almost by accident, was thrown together with Fox, on the road, halfway across Canada. It is an insider-y, eye-witness account of a moment in time that gripped and defined a nation, 43 years ago.
But first, more about me. inom decided to park my car nära the Royal York hållplats and take the subway across town to the book signing venue on the Danforth, the Black Swan värdshus. It was rush hour, a horror drive. Taking the TTC, I figured, would give me time to read another 30 pages of Bill’s great book.

For the past year I’ve been writing a book about a magic time in Canada which still resonates 43 years later and it’s going to be published in late August.
Terry & Me: The Inside Story of Terry Fox’s Marathon of Hope is not my story, but I am proud to have helped bring it to life using all the skills developed as a journalist over the past 46 years.
It is the story as told by Bill Vigars who was the Canadian Cancer Society rep assigned to Terry early on, before it all blew up as the story of the century. The book will be out in time for the annual Terry Fox runs across Canada and around the world and you can pre order here if you’re reading this before it actually hits the shelves.
