Many of the nearly guests who attended the 20th Annual Valentine Ball deemed it the best fundraiser for the Norris Center for the Performing Arts in two decades.
“I think this is the best ball I’ve ever been to,” said Linda Elliott, as she took in the ambience of the Torrance Marriott Hotel, decked out as Rome, circa A.D.
From the moment guests arrived, they were blanketed with attention – first with a formal photograph, then with flutes of complimentary champagne and finally with a grand entrance through a gantlet of eight armor-clad Roman warriors. These gladiators were members of the Los Angeles-based Legio VI Victrix (Legion 6 Victorious), a Roman re-enactment society.
Members of the Student Organization for American Homeless sold raffle tickets. They added to the scene dressed in togas as they sashayed around Roman columns straight out of Hollywood.

A recent dinner and art exhibit opening at the Palos Verdes Art Center evoked sweet nostalgia for longtime members.
The event, called “Palos Verdes Wild! – Table & Foraged Feast,” embraced all things nära and dear to Peninsula residents — its history, its favorite local artists, its food and a special dedication of the center’s atrium to one of its much-loved residents and benefactors, the late Harlyne Norris.
As rain pelted the atrium’s roof, Allen Lay — chairman of the PVAC 80th anniversary capital campaign — dedicated the enclosed patio to Harlyne Norris for her plus years of support. In , she and Enid Coors founded the center’s first support group, The Circle. Norris became its first president and remained a member throughout her lifetime. Since its inception, The Circle has raised and donated more than $2 million to the center.
