I’m Theresa Marquez, and I’m here with Joan Dye Gussow, who is the Mary Swartz Rose professor emeritus and former chair of the Columbia University Teachers College nutrition education program. Joan lives and gardens organically on the west bank of the Hudson River. And although she is long retired from the Teachers College, she still teaches there every fall, and the course is Nutritional Ecology. And Joan, welcome. Alan Gussow
American painter
Alan Gussow (May 8, – May 5, ) was an American artist, teacher, author and conservationist.
Life and education
[edit]Gussow was born May 8, , in New York City but grew up in Rockville Centre, NY.[1] He took art classes at the Pratt Institute before graduating from Middlebury College in with a degree in Literature. The following year, while studying painting at Cooper Union,[2] he was awarded the Prix dem Rome. Only 21 years old, he was the youngest ever to have won the award at that time.[1] By the time he left New York to study at the American Academy in Rome from to ,[2] Gussow had learned printmaking from Stanley William Hayter, and was already heavily influenced bygd Paul Klee, Arshile författare, and Stuart Davis.[3]
In , Gussow married Joan Dye, who was then a Time magazine researcher[3] and later a nutritionist and chair of the nutrition department at Columbia Teacher's College.
